Joining the Library

Students and staff in the Faculty of Health and Social Care are entitled to join the Education Centre Library in West Cumberland Hospital and in Cumberland Infirmary.

 

The pilot P2P: Passport to Partnership scheme enables all SMC staff and students to join and borrow from any North Cumbria NHS Trust library.  Please ask for an application form in your SMC library.

 

Loans

Normal loan books - 4 weeks. Loan entitlement: 6

Periodicals - 1 week (except for the current copy). Loan entitlement: 4

 

Renewals

Items may be renewed by phone, letter, fax or in person.

Items may be reserved by phone, letter, fax or in person.

 

Interlibrary loans

Items not in stock may be obtained from other libraries. Please complete a book request form. A charge is made per item.

 

Intersite loans

Books available in the Carlisle and Lancaster College libraries and in the other North Cumbria health libraries may be borrowed through the hospital intersite loan system. Please ask the Site Librarian for details.

Photocopied articles service

Articles in journals not held at the Library may be obtained from other libraries. Please complete an article request form and sign the copyright declaration. There is a charge for this service. Photocopying facilities are available.

 

Medical Databases

Online access is available to Medline, CINAHL, Ovid's Nursing collection, Mental Health collection, Core Biomedical Collection, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews, etc. To access these, you must apply to the Librarian for a password.

 

Literature Searching

Literature searches are not done for students but training is available.

 

User Education

User education sessions are available if booked in advance.
