SPO107 Biomechanics 1: Introduction to the Mechanics of Movement Sport & Exercise Science This module aims to introduce basic mechanics and apply mechanical principles to human movement. It will develop and demonstrate basic skills in the measurement of mechanical variables related to human movement. Problems relating to the kinetics and kinematics of human movement will be solved. The basic structure of the musculoskeletal system and its function in the mechanics of human movement will be examined. Finally the fundamentals of biomechanics in relation to sport and exercise will be identified.

The aim of this module will be to critically evaluate and analyse the conceptual framework of current management theories and to apply these theories to the context of key organisations in the delivery of sport. This will demonstrate specifically how theory can be relevant for Voluntary groups, Local Authorities and National Governing Bodies
The focus will then shift to an interpretation of the notion of organisational behaviour as distinct from organisational theory. This will then lead to a detailed re-appraisal of the scope of sports organisations and how these can be better understood through knowledge of current management thinking. It is important to be able to apply concepts such as 'best value' and 'running sport' to that theoretical context. More generally the module will develop
SPD326 Vocational Placement Sport Studies & Sport Development This module aims to extend theoretical and conceptual understanding through experience of a sport development or sport policy vocational placement. It will provide opportunities for a critical analysis of professional practice with, where appropriate, reference to underpinning theoretical and conceptual knowledge. In addition, students will have the chance to reflect critically on their skills and competencies in relation to a work-based environment. Appropriate placement contexts might include community, sport specific, target group specific, or generic sport development and/or policy; schools; or physical activity and health development.

SES203 Biomechanics II: Data Collection and Analysis Techniques Sport & Exercise Science This module aims to explore and examine biomechanical data collection and analysis methods. It will utilise a variety of equipment associated with biomechanics for the collection and analysis of performance variables. More complex theory relating to the understanding of human motion and sports performance will be introduced. The results from a variety of data collection methods to further an understanding of the role of performance variables in sport and human motion will be combined.

In addition it will identify and explain the effect of practice conditions on skill acquisition. The perceptual factors that underlie expert performance will be discussed and explored. Students will develop awareness and understanding of links between physical activity and wellness, and physical activity and disease. They will develop their understanding of the epidemiology of disease and physical activity participation in Britain, and the mechanisms by which physical activity can prevent or improve the prognosis of disease. Reasons for non-participation will be analysed, including barriers to behaviour change and inequalities affecting population participation. Students will also be introduced to the theory of health promotion, and examine health promotion models.
SES221 Exercise Testing and Prescription Sport & Exercise Science This module aims to develop an awareness and understanding of exercise prescription and fitness testing in a health-related context. The rationale for, and underlying theory of a variety of fitness tests will be examined, and students will begin to develop their competence in testing procedures. Principles of physical activity prescription for health will be introduced.
SES222 Injuries in Sport and Physical Activity Sport & Exercise Science This module aims to examine the epidemiology and treatment of sport and activity-related injuries. Students will analyse the physiological, mechanical and psychological factors that influence injury development and recovery from injury. Immediate treatment and longer-term rehabilitation methods will be evaluated, and factors relating to safety and injury prevention will be discussed.

In addition, students will have the chance to reflect critically on their skills and competencies in relation to a work-based environment. Appropriate placement contexts might include professional sport clubs (sport science support); health and fitness centres; physical activity and health development initiatives; exercise prescription schemes; cardiac rehabilitation schemes; schools; community, sport specific, target group specific, or generic sport development.
SES302 Research Dissertation Sport & Exercise Science The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to identify, design, conduct, analyse and evaluate an independent research project, utilising knowledge, understanding and skills developed in the Sport & Exercise Science programme.
SES310 Advanced Training Methods for Enhanced Sports Performance Sport & Exercise Science This module will examine a range of training methods used for the enhancement of sports performance. Students will devise, implement and critically reflect upon a training program for an athlete. Sports Performance test data will be analysed and interpreted.
SES311 Issues in Sport Psychology Coaching & Sport Performance

This module will take a topic based approach to introduce students to the role of the sports psychologist in athlete support.
SES312 Biomechanics III: Locomotion and Sports Techniques Sport & Exercise Science This module will apply methods of biomechanical data collection (video. force plate and EMG) and reduction to the analysis of performance variables in locomotion and sports techniques. Students will integrate kinetic variables, kinematic variables and anatomical structures in order to experience limits and depth of performance variables. The role of performance variables in locomotion and sports techniques analysis will be evaluated. Finally the application of biomechanical principles in the study of selected sports injuries and footwear design will be considered.
SES313 Advanced Sport Physiology Sport & Exercise Science This module will examine a range of advanced theoretical concepts in sports physiology. Students will collect, analyse and interpret advanced physiological data. A range of advanced physiological tests for sports performance will be examined.
SES314 Effects of Extreme Environments on Human Performance Sport & Exercise Science This module aims to develop an awareness and understanding of the human response to extreme environments. Students will analyse the long and short-term effects of environmental stress on the body, and evaluate the implications for physical performance.

This module aims to develop critical autonomy in relation to physical activity promotion, health development, public health and the wider health policy agenda and to extend knowledge and understanding of the determinants of health and health as an essentially contested concept, in relation to physical activity. The evidence, implications and recommendations for national physical activity targets for the adult population and for young people will be examined and analysed. The module will also examine and analyse physical activity and health policy with reference to political ideology and inequalities in health.
SES321 Physical Activity and Wellbeing: Youth, Age and Disability Sport & Exercise Science Students will develop an understanding and awareness of appropriate and effective physical activity in the promotion of good health amongst the young, elderly and people with disabilities. They will critically evaluate the physiological, psychological and sociological factors that effect participation in physical activity and discuss the promotion of physical activity in these population groups.
SES322 Physical Activity, Disease and Rehabilitation Sport & Exercise Science Students will develop an understanding and awareness of how physical activity plays a role in the rehabilitation process from disease, orthopaedic injury and mental health problems. They will evaluate the physiological and psychological factors that effect participation in physical activity and discuss how appropriate exercise prescription can assist in the alleviation of symptoms and treatment of disease. The promotion of physical activity and the role of the GP referral scheme in the promotion of physical activity to patients will also be discussed and analysed.
SES323 Physical Actiivty, Nutrition and Weight Management Sport & Exercise Science Students will develop awareness and understanding of the determinants, prevalence and health risks of obesity in different populations. They will then examine the roles of physical activity and nutrition in weight management, including both physiological and psychological considerations. Exercise prescription for weight management and obesity will also be discussed.

The history of sport can only be understood by placing within the wider context and structure of leisure. This is because the concept of leisure more usefully characterises sport in Britain prior to World War Two. This module will outline and investigate key developments in leisure and establish their economic and social context in the period 1800-1914. Students will gain an insight into the fundamental social changes involved in the department of modern leisure habits of the English people in the years from early-industrialisation to the emergence of a mature industrialised society by the beginning of the First World War. They will examine and assess the meanings and values implicit in the various leisure activities open to the different social classes and their relationship to factors such as time, money, and regional and national identity. Students will also explore the historiography and debates associated with leisure.

The aim of this module is to provide students with the ability to extend their theoretical and conceptual understanding through experience of a work placement. The module will provide opportunities for a critical analysis of professional practice with, where appropriate, reference to underpinning theoretical and conceptual knowledge. In addition, students will have the chance to reflect critically on their skills and competencies in relation to a work-based environment. This reflection will feed directly into their personal development planning. Appropriate placement contexts might include sports development, leisure services and organisations, health-related spheres, play schemes, coaching-related organisations.

The history of sport can only be understood by placing within the wider context and structure of leisure. This is because the concept of leisure more usefully characterises sport in Britain prior to World War Two. This module will outline and investigate key developments in leisure and establish their economic and social context in the period 1914-1970. It will provide an insight into the fundamental social changes involved in the development of modern leisure habits of the English people in the years from the emergence of a mature industrialised society by the beginning of the First World War to the 1970s. Students will examine and assess the implicit and explicit meanings and values implicit in the various leisure activities open to the different social classes. They will also explore the historiography and critical debates associated with leisure which will permeate the course eg the development of class-based leisure cultures; culture hegemony/commercialism and market forces; the role of the mass media; race and gender.

Consideration will be given to the classic frameworks of free-market economies and then related to aspects of sustainable development for small businesses. It will provide some of the background theory for the practical aspect of enterprise planning to be looked at in TLR271.

This will be demonstrated through examination of local to global case-studies, which will allow students to develop critical skills and practice self-reflection. This module is the key core module of level 1 (I) and links to all other level 1 (I) modules implicitly through thematic relationships, and explicitly through cross-modular formative assessment.
TLR110 Business, Society & Environment Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to outline the relevance of models of sustainable development for business, communities, non-governmental and public sector organisations, and the roles of the global and local agencies involved in sustainable development. It will provide some of the case-study contexts for understanding of concepts introduced in TLR100, with associated cross-modular formative assessment. These contexts, where possible, will reflect student’s vocational interests.
TLR112 Adventure Recreation Concepts Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to introduce inter-disciplinary concepts of space, place and culture related to the fundamental components of adventure recreation as both personal and global phenomenon. This will focus on factors influencing demand for adventure recreation and supply responses from the industry. Links will be made to TLR100 providing some of the adventure recreation contexts.

TLR211 Sustainable Tourism Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to chart the development of the concepts of sustainable tourism, and relate these to current sustainability and tourism theory, and the role of key actors; issues surrounding sustainable tourism will be examined. There are opportunities to integrate study between elements of this module and TLR210.
TLR212 Communities & Tourism Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to examine the interactions between different communities involved in recreation and tourism, the effects of globalisation and localisation on those relationships, and models and implementation of stakeholder involvement and empowerment. Comparisons will be made between the developed and Third world. There are opportunities to integrate study between elements of this module and TLR210.
TLR221 Adventure Recreation in Outdoor Environments Adventure Recreation Management This module aims to further develop in students an understanding of theoretical frameworks in adventure recreation management, a range of contexts in which these might be applied and their practice. There are management links to TLR210, and to TLR222 which prepares students to further apply theory to practice through the placement.
TLR222 Skills for Practical & Professional Experience Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to evaluate personal skills and experience. To develop an awareness of the skills and experience required in relation to the work experience or placement and devise a relevant training log to improve personal skills. To develop perspectives on human resource management and organisational theory. To clarify and define the nature of effective communication and to develop personal communication skills. To develop knowledge of the legal aspects of practice.

TLR310 Applied Sustainability Techniques Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to appraise tools and techniques employed to achieve sustainable management, planning and development of organisations, within current political, regulatory and voluntary frameworks, and to formulate sustainable strategies for an organisation. Also links between philosophy and practice of sustainable development will be evaluated. Building on experiences (specially from the placement and TLR210) this module provides possible solutions to sustainable development that can be critically analysed.
TLR311 Contemporary Issues in Adventure Recreation Adventure Recreation Management It is the aim of this module to develop students’ critical awareness of contemporary issues in adventure recreation management. Issues will be analysed within broader theoretical perspectives, allowing students to explore the interface of theory and practice. Issues may be developed from students’ placement experiences with linkages to TLR321.
TLR312 Cultural Tourism Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to scrutinise the principles and practices of a key tourism type and evaluate its relationship with sustainability, and to chart management that may aid the development of that relationship. Some common and integrating themes will be co-taught between this module and TLR313.There will also be linkages with sustainability tools and methods examined inTLR310.
TLR313 Ecotourism Adventure Recreation Management The aims of this module are to scrutinise the principles and practices of a key tourism type and evaluate its relationship with sustainability, and to chart management that may aid the development of that relationship. Some common and integrating themes will be c-taught between this module and TLR312. There will also be linkages with sustainability tools and methods examined in TLR310.
TLR321 Professional Reflective Practice Adventure Recreation Management The aim of the module is to develop the reflective abilities of the students so that they are aware of their emerging professional identify, practice and ethics and can demonstrate an understanding of organisations and human resources. The intention is that students will be able to critique their own work and the work of other professionals and organisations. This will support students in managing their relationships with themselves, with others and with organisations. The module will use the placement experience as a context for developing this process. It will support the development and implementation of a career plan and prepare students for supervision and appraisal.
