Human Performance Laboratories

The Human Performance Laboratories at St Martin's College are dedicated to the study of exercise physiology and biomechanics.

Physiology Laboratory
The Physiology Laboratory is used for teaching core modules through the first and second years of the Sport and Exercise Science degree, along with optional modules within the final year depending upon the chosen pathway of your degree. The lab is also used during the third year of the Sports Studies degree. The laboratory is equipped with:

* Monark Cycle Ergometers, Concept II Rowing Ergometer, HP Cosmos Treadmill (which has a top speed of 44 kph)
* TechnoGym Spintrainer for cyclists to mount they're own bikes on
* Medical Graphics CPX-D Online Gas Analysis System,Hitech Gas Analysis System and Douglas Bags for respiratory gas analysis
* Lactate Pro, Accusport, Dr Lange and Medisense Analysers for the measurement of a variety of capillary blood parameters
* Harpenden skinfold caliper and BodyStat 1500 for the assessment of body composition and Polar Accusport heart rate Monitors, to name just some of the equipment.
Biomechanics Laboratory
The Biomechanics Laboratory is used for teaching Sport and Exercise Science core modules during both the first and second years and option modules within the third year.
It is also used for some optional modules of the Sports Studies course.

The laboratory is equipped with both 2 and 3D Motion Analysis systems, Force Platform and EMG system.
Lancaster Labs

Both Sports and Exercise Science and Sports Studies degrees are structured to enable students to gain hands on experience in the use of all the equipment.

In addition to the practical skills gained during the taught modules, there is the opportunity for students to be involved in research and Sport Science Support work that is undertaken by staff in the school and to volunteer to be subjects for the current 3rd year Dissertations. Support work is currently being undertaken with local athletes from rowing, cycling and distance running.
