FdA Outdoor Studies induction
Added: 16 January 2007

15 students started on the FdA in Outdoor Studies last week with three days of 'welcome' time including an introduction to the course and to College services and systems, meeting and socialising with current students and a visit to Outward Bound Ullswater (our partner organisation). An enjoyable day was had at Outward Bound with team building and problem solving activities, all in the rain and the wind. This week, the students are undertaking their first module which has included the best day weather-wise for about three months, canoeing on the lake! Today (Wednesday) there is a promise of a storm and the students have retreated to the more sheltered environs of Cathedral Caves, Tilberthwaite with tutor, Rich Ensoll, for more of their "Teaching and Learning in the Outdoors" module.Top of Page

News from Outdoor Studies
Added: 8 January 2007

Before Christmas, third year outdoor studies students on the Expedition Organisation module undertook a number of expeditions as part of their assessment. A solo walker in Norway was hampered by deep snow, tandem cyclists battled through the Cumbrian rain, another solo walker enjoyed a section of the Appalachian trail, the Cuillin Ridge was visited, the Loch Ness monster was sought in sea kayaks, Croatian National Parks were visited, Haggis were chased around Loch Lomond, the Outer Hebrides explored, Shetland beaches kited, Snowdon peaks were bagged, bushcraft bashed, the Dingle explored and the birth-places of explorers visited... ....to name a few. All are now back safely having had real adventures and having learned much. Real experience of the outdoors is a key constituent of the course and continues to contribute to its reputation for quality and genuine challengeTop of Page
