Research and Publications

The School of Sport and Outdoor Studies is fast developing an active and exciting research community and employs four research & teaching assistants to help promote its research culture and profile. The research interests of our staff are broad and embrace the study of sport and the outdoors through a variety of different disciplinary perspectives from sociology and history to physiology and psychology.

As a School we are committed to publishing our research findings and are proud of our record in this area. Staff have published books and journal articles on subjects as diverse as the history of rock climbing, football hooliganism, the effects of music on exercise performance and the physiology of football referees.

The School also runs research seminars where external and internal speakers present the findings of their ongoing research. This encourages staff and postgraduates to look at sport, exercise and outdoor studies from perspectives beyond their own discipline and plays a central role in the development of our research culture.
